Lovely in Limestone

Here we have a monumental abstract stone sculpture from 1977. The piece is signed with 3 triangles and the date, 77. Although we can't say exactly who the artist is or where he or she is from, the artist produced a finely carved and polished modernist beauty. Large and substantial at 21 inches tall.

Odd Couple

Striking studio pieces created by Swedish artisan Claes Thell - created some time in the 70s. The surface texture is a result of his signature technique, referred to as "carbon crystalline" glazing, giving them a beautifully imperfect pitted gunmetal quality. We are most intrigued by the unique, just off center, openings at the top.

Wabi-Sabi Pair

Wabi-sabi is the most conspicuous and characteristic feature of traditional Japanese beauty and it occupies roughly the same position in the Japanese pantheon of aesthetic values as do the Greek ideals of beauty and perfection in the West. If an object or expression can bring about a sense of serene melancholy and a spiritual longing, then that object could be said to be Wabi-sabi, Wabi-sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.
Our beautiful pair of 18th Century keyaki wood chairs perfectly illustrate the ideals of imperfect and unfinished as aesthetically pleasing. Constructed from old rice mortars, they are 18.5 inches tall and sold as a pair.

Flambé D'Afrique

So, I went to the Paris Flee Market and what did I buy - French ceramics? No. But, I did find one of the most spectacular and monumental pieces of Rörstrand Flambe Art Deco that we've ever seen.
On each side is a scene of a warrior fighting a lion, the decoration is by the artist Oskar Dahl (1902-1966). A very large and impressive unique work of art at 14 inches by 14 inches.

The Great Buddha of Kamakura

The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a monumental outdoor bronze sculpture of Buddha located at the KĹŤtoku-in Temple in Kamakura Japan. The bronze statue was cast in 1252. According to temple records. It was preceded by a giant wooden Buddha, which was completed in 1243 after ten years of continuous labor, the funds having been raised by Lady Inada (Inada-no-Tsubone) and the Buddhist priest JĹŤkĹŤ of TĹŤtĹŤmi. That wooden statue was damaged by a storm in 1248, and the hall containing it was destroyed, so JĹŤkĹŤ suggested making another statue of bronze, and the huge amount of money necessary for this and for a new hall was raised for the project.
The hall was destroyed by a storm in 1334, and rebuilt again, then was damaged by yet another storm in 1369, and was rebuilt yet again. The last building housing the statue was washed away in a tsunami in 1498, Since then, the Great Buddha has stood in the open air and has always been one of Japan's most visited sites.
The original statue is 48 feet tall, our reproduction which dates to the 19th Century is 7.5 inches tall.

Lusting for Lustre

Søren Kongstrand was an entrepreneurial Dane from the town of Esbjerg, Denmark. His original trade was creating copper plumbing for his family owned hardware store. Alongside his practical training, he started to gain interest in copper as an art form. He finally moved on to pottery full time - almost always incorporating copper into his signature lustre glazes. This piece is likely an early career work dating from the time he opened his studio - around 1911. The result is a metallic sheen that exposes layers of oxidation ranging from minty green to a pleasing dusty rose.
A huge statement at 14 inches tall.

Beauty & The Beast

Jean Marais was the rare quadruple threat Actor/Ceramicist/Beauty & Beast. The french star of his famous lover Jean Cocteau's film was also an accomplished surrealist in his own right. He created this beastly piece, thrown and signed by his own hand, in the 1950s - no doubt influenced by his most famous role as La BĂŞte. The glaze is a lustrous gun metal grey.
16"tall x 8" (horn to horn)
